Varroa-resistant queen bees for summer 2024
February 21, 2024
The moves, production changes and business rationalizations, as well as the reasons for nest deaths (see blog) are starting to be put to rest, and it is time to focus more on queen rearing again. All of our own nests have now been replaced with queens resistant to Varroa. When inquiries about queens appeared already in midwinter, attitudes towards commercial queen rearing are changing again after the gap year.
I will be accepting advance reservations from February onwards. Price 55 € / piece. The breeding mother will come from Lunden, as in previous years. The population of goldfinches in the mating area is from the nests of the daughters of Lunden's mothers.

Return to normal production
June 25, 2022
The latest Organic terms and conditions were sent to producers, and when reading the terms and conditions, it was very difficult to understand. The exact specifications were sometimes even completely exhausted. The most problematic oddity was that bees were not allowed to be fed at all during the harvest season. (edit. 2024, later it was clarified that bees could be fed, but a separate notification must be made for each feeding.)
The previous summer of 2021 was so hot and dry in this area that the plants did not produce honey, and the hives were starving. My starting point is that if you take care of the animals, then food or nutrition is a basic need for the animals as well. When conditions force worse care than before, the better option is to move from the bureaucracy to conventional production. Organic has somehow driven itself into a contradiction in terms of climate friendliness. Shipping feed sugars from India or Brazil does not sound very wise to my ears in terms of the overall environmental load. If there is no heavy industry here in North Karelia, traffic and the pollution it creates are minimal. That way, the customer gets top-quality food without the Organic label, or maybe even better environmentally.

No mothers available for summer 2022. Summer 2022 is going through corporate restructuring. Online store no longer in use.

This summer 2022 I will not be making for sale, only for my own use.
Lunden's line is available for use this summer from Timo Rahkola, and you can contact him at: 0440417890, tm.rahkola@gmail.com
The plan is to reopen the sale of queens resistant to Varroa in 2023, as well as log and small nests for amateur use.

Chaga-Mesis
20.12.2021
Mesiäinen has registered the brand Mesis, and its first product, Chaga-mesis , a chaga-honey tea, has been completed. The product is currently aimed exclusively at the export market, with the main markets being South Korea and Japan.

There was news from Germany that the freely mated offspring of the Lunden Resistant Queens strain have also done well in tick areas without any control measures. Only 3% tick contamination was observed.

Mothers for next summer 2021
19.2.20201
Lunden and Mesiäinen's collaboration will continue in 2021, and Varroa-resistant queen bees can be reserved for next summer from both Juhani and Jussi.

Juhani's thoughts and experiences on raising and caring for resistant bees.
12.2.2021
"One of the strongest insights in bee breeding is probably that the mite is no longer thought of as an enemy, but as a partner, once breeding has achieved a successful coexistence between host and parasite."

New Corporate Identity and New Products
By Virran Varrelta Design
Mesiäinen's products have been given a completely new look, and the product name is Mesiäinen. Thanks to Virran Varrelta Design, Sari Kaijan for the design work. The name Karelia Honey will be forgotten due to feedback from the Finnish Food Safety Authority: A Greek tobacco company has trademarked the word 'Karelia' - among other things - in connection with sweeteners.
Therefore, the personality of both the company and the products can be described through the word Mesiäinen from now on. Mesiäinen is now protected both in the trade register and as a trademark.

New honey products have been created as a result of product development and have entered production and the market.
